On Tuesday January 18, I noticed that the sap was flowing from a Carolina Maple in Catch the Wind. The tree is six feet or so off the path between the Vapor Rings and Mist Garden Exhibits. This tree has been the topic of previous posts. Two new sapsucker wells have been drilled into the [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Live Eagle Cam
January 22nd, 2011For those interested in raptors, large raptors, there is a live feed to a nesting Bald Eagle at Jordan Lake (Chatham County, NC). The camera is directly above the nest. I was just now (9:17 AM, 1/22/11) watching the adult tend to the chicks. At this time there are pieces of fish on the edge [...] Read the rest of this entry »

The Fox and the Squirrel
January 5th, 2011As I stood near the top of the boardwalk, unsuccessfully attempting to photograph a squirrel stripping a pine cone of its seeds (the squirrel kept turning its back to me just as I tripped the shutter) I noticed a reddish-brown and gray colored object quickly move out from under some exposed tree roots to my [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Mergs Strut their Stuff!
January 4th, 2011Today (1/4/11) there were two pair of mergansers in the Wetlands, and they were struttin’ their stuff! As I inspected the boardwalk that leads down into the Wetlands for icy spots this morning, I noticed another pair of mergs on the now mostly open water. The birds were doing their pair bond dance, or courtship [...] Read the rest of this entry »
