Fish Crows continued to fly over on Tuesday (3/9). I searched my personal audio library that I keep for video soundtracks and found a file that contains the nasal calls of the Fish Crows as they wing by. Have a listen here: The same day, Spring Peepers, Upland Chorus Frogs, (The chorus frogs are the [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Pickerel Frogs and Green (blue) Snakes
July 15th, 2009It was still raining on July 5 as I headed out to the Wetlands along the paved path on the Explore the Wild/Catch the Wind loop. As I walked along, I could see ahead of me small frogs hopping to the left and to the right, hopping to get out of the way as I [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Snakes, and a Toad Reprise
March 31st, 2009At least one Black Racer was reported by one of the Museum staff during the final weekend of the month, and the first Northern Water Snake was spotted on the 29th from the circular platform midway down the boardwalk that leads into the Wetlands. Where it was going, and the reason [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Baby Snapper and the Last Water Snake
November 15th, 2008A Snapping Turtle was rescued from the horseshoe shaped pond at Flap the Wings in Catch the Wind next to the Ornithopter. The turtle had found itself into the water filter basket of the pond, with no easy way out. This very young Snapping Turtle, only about 1.75 inches from the front of the shell [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Tiny Toads, Morphing Frogs, and a Nest Robber
June 15th, 2008On the first day of June I heard Narrow-mouthed Toads calling from the Wetlands. They’re about 1-1.5 inches in length. They spend a good deal of their time in the woods in burrows or under rocks or logs so they’re tough to find visually. I heard their lamb-like “baaaa” calls coming from the Wetlands when [...] Read the rest of this entry »
