Herpetological Report from The Wetlands by , Ranger

February 2nd, 2011

A lone Yellow-bellied Slider was out basking on Friday January 28, and again the next day, 29 January. The yellow-bellied Slider (above) was up and about due to the unusually warm 60˚ weather. The temps slid down to the near normal 40˚s for the next several days and the turtles went back under cover. - [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Yellow-bellied Slider hatches in Catch the Wind by , Ranger

October 14th, 2010

While Ranger Katie was tending the Ornithopter on Wednesday, October 13th, she noticed the mulch and leaves moving about below the hollies next to the entrance to the big, blue flying machine. Having a closer look, she discovered that the movement was caused by a very tiny turtle, apparently, a hatchling Yellow-bellied Slider. Katie gave [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Reptilian Rescue by , Ranger

April 22nd, 2010

Spring is a the time when young snakes, hatched or born last year, are seen moving about the unfamiliar landscape on their way to their summer haunts, wherever that may be. Sometimes, they need a little help in getting there. I received a call on my radio from Animal Keeper Erin Brown about one such [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Now Showing by , Ranger

March 27th, 2010

During the past week many new flowers, animals and insects have appeared. First, a few plants. A few trees. Finally! After having seen damselflies emerge from the Wetlands since the 19th of March I was able to get a photo of one, a Fragile Forktail, another “punctuation mark” insect. Reptiles made themselves more available for viewing [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Snakes! by , Ranger

March 11th, 2010

March 10th was the day! A little after noon I spotted the first-of-the-season Northern Water Snake coiled up under a Baldcypress at the bottom of the boardwalk in the Wetlands. The same day, Lead Animal Keeper Kristen spied a Copperhead along the path in Explore the Wild. And today, Lead Horticulturists Joe found several Rough [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Late Season Herps by , Ranger

October 20th, 2009

The first couple of weeks in October were rather cloudy and wet. Whenever the sun did show itself, the turtles of the Wetlands took advantage of it by hauling out and basking in its warm rays. Young and old alike were out on all available perches. Mostly Yellow-bellied Turtles, but even a large snapper was [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Late May Herp Transitions by , Ranger

May 31st, 2009

I’ve not seen a Northern Water Snake in the Wetlands since the first week in May. Yellow-bellied Turtles continue to come ashore to lay eggs. The one pictured was alongside the path in front of the Lemur House. Following the downpours on Memorial Day, a Painted Turtle was spied crossing the paved path headed towards [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Egg-laying Turtles, new Toads, and Treefrog Time! by , Ranger

May 15th, 2009

I spotted two Yellow-bellied Turtles out of the water and hiking the paths around the Wetlands looking for a place to lay eggs. One of these large females was in the process of digging a hole for the eggs when I came upon her. If you happen to see a tiny brown-gray creature hopping along [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Snakes Mingle, Snappers Tumble, and Yellow-bellies Hatch by , Ranger

April 15th, 2009

Each day that I visited the Wetlands during the first half of April I was able to locate from four to six different Northern Water Snakes. Towards afternoon of each day, there were at least four of these variably colored snakes on a near horizontal Black Willow trunk no more than a dozen feet from [...] Read the rest of this entry »

Basking Sites at a Premium, Amphibs Exploit the Season by , Ranger

March 15th, 2009

By the end of the first week of this period the Wetland’s turtles, frogs, and toads were out in numbers. Yellow-bellied Turtles and Painted Turtles were basking on logs, rocks and any other object projecting from the water, with little room to spare. The young Yellow-bellied Turtle in the image at left (perhaps a two-year-old) [...] Read the rest of this entry »
